Color Matters · Ágnes Eperjesi

Ágnes Eperjesi has been exploring the possibilities of the widening of the scope of photography. She established her own signature style in the end of the nineties which makes her images instantly recognizable. She breathed new life into the classic concept of photogram with her Polaroid photograms. Her creative work is motivated by the conjunction of subject and technique and their close interdependence. Throughout the last years of her creative work, she realized that artists and scientists cannot come to terms in the questions of color theory. The essence of her research method is to explain and illustrate through own experiments. She involves the audience in her artistic creation through offering them first hand experience.

Ágnes Eperjesi’s thrilling investigations into the field of color theory is exhibited by three institutions in a series of exhibitions.

The exhibition-series is realized in three different locations, with only brand new pieces on show. All the three exhibitions present the questions raised by the artist’s color-theory investigation from a different angle. However the issues presented gain new perspective, new essences and generate new contexts. Works are distributed through the three locations according to the body-mind-spirit trinity.

Hungarian House of Photography, Mai Manó House: There will always be more fresh laundry
30. April-21 June, 2009.

The venue for the exhibition presenting the material approach will be Mai Manó House, where the first exhibition of the series opens at 30. April, under the title “There will always be more fresh laundry” The works presented here are the straight continuation of Ágnes Eperejesi’s earlier works: next to the satirical works stemming from the everyday experience of house-work, we encounter video-works and an interactive installation.
Eperjesi encourages us to not only see colors through the eye of the photographer but see them from the angle of the housewife, through the drum of the washing machine.
While of course we cannot linger on about colors at every washing, we do not only meet domestic thoughts and works at the exhibition, and we become witness to their transubstantiation.
The exhibition will be opened by Anna Gács, critic at 6 pm, 30. April in the Sunlight Studio of Mai Manó House.

Nessim Gallery: Nothing beyond colors
5.May-5.June, 2009

This exhibition focuses on the encounter of colored light and photographic paper. We have the chance to follow the abstract conclusions of Eperjesi’s filed-trip to the world of color-theory.
This is the friendly face of science. Though science is eager to divide rainbow to tiny, drab particles to decide what it is made up of, these simple components reinstalled result in flamboyant images needing no explanation.
The exhibition will be opened by Gábor Zemplén science historian with a screening at 7 pm, on 5. May.

King St. Stpehen Museum: Small Prayer
9. May-20. September, 2009.

The audience will see an interactive light-installation and video-animation in King St. Stephen Museum of Székesfehérvár.
“A Short Prayer” will be presented in the darkened Ceremonial Hall. He screened texts become decipherable by the contribution of the audience. As the visitor walks down in front of the illegible sentence-line of two texts projected above each other from two projectors, blocks out one of the sources of light unwillingly with his or her body. This way the letters and words connect to make up a sensible sentence.
The visitor will not only refer the message of the sentence to him or herself, but is prompted to muse over the relation of the observer and the observed, rethinking his or her own role in the relation.
The light and video-installations model the act of observing and the first steps of interpretation in a spectacular way. With the use of texts, Eperjesi establishes the connection with her earlier works and finishes the arch of the series of exhibitions.
“A Short Prayer” will be opened by Zsófia Bán, writer and critic at 11.30 am, on 9. May in the Ceremonial Hall of King St. Stephen Museum.
