European Reformation had a crucial role in the development of European, and thus, Hungarian culture. It promoted industrial growth, the formation of civil thought, the enrichment of mother languages, and the spread of literacy; its effects were defining and shaped our existence for centuries. One of the most significant and most influential personae was John Calvin (1509-1564). In 2009, the Hungarian Reformed Church is celebrating the anniversary of his birth together with all the reformed churches in the world. There are several cultural events, festivals, programs, and professional events organized with relation to the anniversary sponsored by the National Cultural Fund (Nemzeti Kulturális Alap - NKA).
The Hungarian House of Photography - Mai Manó House joins the Calvin Jubilee 2009 program series by organizing two, closely interconnected and integrated events; an exhibition representing the built heritage of the Hungarian Reformation and its contemporary thought and expression and a traveling exhibition.
“From birth to death and beyond - Calvin 500”
between November 5, 2009 and December 6, 2009, our exhibition portrays the age-old artifacts and churches of the Reformed Church, along with today’s religious institutions on holidays as well as regular days at the André Kertész Hall on Mai Manó House’s 1st floor. It exhibits works submitted for an invitation-only photo contest announced according to the five principles of Reformation (Solus Christus, Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Soli Deo Gloria). There will be artistic images of the Vizsoly Bible, the Debrecen Reformed College, the everyday life of the Bethesda Hospital in Budapest, the reformed cemetery in Szatmárcseke, and genre works of reformed communities across and inside the borders. The invited photographers are: Imre Benko, Krisztián Bócsi, Szabolcs Dudás, András Fekete, László Háris, Géza Hernád, János László, András Szebeni, and Gergely Túry. Parallel to the exhibition, there will be roundtable discussions and movie screenings in connection with the past, present and future role of the Reformed Church. Guided tours and presentations on comprehending photos will also be organized.
The Hungarian House of Photography - Mai Manó House also launches a traveling exhibition. The exhibition
“…The LORD looked down from heaven”
showcases aerial shots taken by photographer János László of religiously and culturally significant buildings. János László has been taking air photos of Hungary from high up for ten years. He developed a tool (a small-sized helicopter) that can take his camera up high while he sets the composition, size or other features of the shot through a monitor down below. He also flies creating aesthetically and artistically composed shots in the genre of classic aerial photos. On the one hand, his photos explore in time and size the variety of churches (from “the barefoot Notre Dame” (church in Tákos) to the Grand Church of Debrecen, from the church at a junction of the capital to the one in a parish with decreasing population); on the other hand, they represent memorial sites of Hungarian history and culture from the birth-place of the Vizsoly Bible through the Szatmácseke cemetery with its boat-shaped headstones to the memorial site of the Battle of Pákozd (or Battle of Sukoró). Not in the least, these photos offer perspectives that will surprise even those familiar with the culture of the denomination. The exhibition is organized in Debrecen, Sárospatak, and Pécs in November and December, 2009.
