Hannes Heikura

Hannes Heikura (1958) is living and working in Helsinki. He graduated at the Department of Physics at the Tampere University of Technology and studied photography at the Training Centre of the University of Art and Design in Helsinki (TAIK) followed by Motion Picture, Television and Production Design at the same university. The training method of TAIK - which integrates group work, creative criticism and art theory - is re­sponsible for the development of the so-called Helsinki School and the high international profile of the Finnish photography in recent years.

Heikura belongs to the first generation photographers with training in art, whose work is built upon the art tradition of photography.

Hannes Heikura has been a press photographer of the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper since 1984.

Awards and Prizes:
Press Photography of the Year, Finland, 1992, 1996, 1997, 2001.
Third place at the Fuji Euro Press Award competition, London 1998.
