More Light, More Shadow. Rogi André (1900-1970)

The role of Hungarian artists and intellectuals, as well as their journals, in the European avant-garde movements between the two world wars is now well known. As soon as the young Rózsa Klein moved to Paris, she came into contact with the circle of European surrealist writers and artists. She was first introduced to this milieu between 1929 and 1932 through her husband, André Kertész, and later became independently immersed in this world, gaining recognition with her first nude photographs.

However, Rogi André was, above all, a portrait photographer for multiple generations of artists and writers from the 1930s to the 1950s. The wide array of artists featured in her portraits reflects the breadth of her artistic connections—she photographed such well-known figures as André Breton, Kandinsky, Artaud, Le Corbusier, Colette, and Dora Maar, among many others, including numerous portraits of women. This rich body of work demonstrates just how important it is for a portrait photographer to have earned the trust of such a diverse group of artists. Precisely because these artists considered Rogi André one of their own, they opened themselves up to her, knowing she had the ability to transform even the most artificial and conventional poses into moments of meaningful dialogue.
