Bolla Szilvia fotográfiához való hozzáállása mindig tárgyorientált volt. A fényképre, mint egy mágikus tárgyra tekintett, és az azzal való kísérletezés arra ösztönözte, hogy jobban elmerüljön a különböző anyagkísérletekben és folyamatokban, melyek során a nem-fényképezés (non-photography), az absztrakció és a poszt-digitális képalkotás került előtérbe. A fototechnikában rejlő absztrakciós lehetőségek, valamint a fotográfia installációval, szobrászattal való metszéspontjainak vizsgálata vezette érdeklődését a fotó mint médium határterületei felé. Mindez gyakran alapul a fényképezőgép használatát nélkülöző eljárásokon, így például a fotogram vagy a luminogram technikáján, amiket később UV nyomtatással vegyít hővel formált plexiüvegen.

Bolla Szilvia a londoni Camberwell College of Arts képzőművészet szakán végzett, majd mester fokozatot szerzett a budapesti Moholy-Nagy Művészeti Egyetem fotográfia szakán, mindemellett térinstallációt tanult a Berlini Művészeti Egyetem.

A fotótechnikában rejlő absztrakciós lehetőségek, valamint a fotográfia installációval, illetve a szobrászattal való metszéspontjainak vizsgálata vezette érdeklődését a fotó mint médium határterületei felé. Munkái középpontjában a fotografikus kép érzéki és ontológiai természetének vizsgálata áll. Mindez gyakran alapul a fényképezőgép használatát nélkülöző eljárásokon, így például a fotogram vagy a luminogram technikáján, amiket később UV nyomtatással vegyít, hővel formált plexiüvegen.

Az elmúlt években munkáit bemutatták többek között a varsói Stefan Gierowski Foundationben, a Trafó Galériában, az Art Quarter Project Space-ben, a Kieselbach Galériában, az UNSEEN Photography Fesztiválon, valamint a londoni Victoria & Albert Múzeumban.

2019-ben a párizsi Cité Internationale des Arts, 2022-ben a New York-i International Studio & Curatorial Program rezidenciaprogramjaiban vett részt.

Hágában él és dolgozik. Magyarországon a Glassyard Galéria képviseli.

Szilvia Bolla always maintained an object-oriented approach to photography. She has looked upon the photograph as a magical object, and her experiments with it encouraged her to delve deeper into unconventional uses of materials and processes, with non-photography, abstraction and post-digital imaging coming to the fore of her practice. Her interest in photography’s potential for abstraction and the intersections of photography with installation and sculpture led her to explore the outer reaches of the medium of photography. To this end, she often employs methods that do not involve the use of a camera, such as the photogram or the luminogram, whose images she then prints with UV on thermoformed Plexiglas.

Szilvia Bolla graduated from Camberwell College of Arts, London, with a degree in Fine Art, and then obtained an MA in Photography from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest. She also studied spatial installation at the Berlin University of the Arts.

Her interest in photography’s potential for abstraction and the intersections of photography with installation and sculpture led her to explore the outer reaches of the medium of photography. Her works focus on the sensory and ontological nature of the photographic image. To this end, she often uses methods that do not involve the use of a camera, such as the photogram or the luminogram, whose images she then prints with UV on thermoformed plexiglas.

In recent years, her work has been shown at the Stefan Gierowski Foundation in Warsaw, at Trafó Gallery, the Art Quarter Project Space, in Kieselbach Gallery, at the UNSEEN Photography Festival, and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, among other places.

She participated in the residency programme of the Paris Cité Internationale des Arts in 2019, and of the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York in 2022.

She lives and works in The Hague. In Hungary she is represented by Glassyard Gallery.
