Szalai Dániel drámai munkái ember és állat kapcsolatát vizsgálják. Legújabb sorozata abból a hírből indult ki, hogy az állattenyésztésben is elkezdtek arcfelismerő programot alkalmazni. A kiterjedt technológiai infrastruktúra lehetővé teszi majd a tehenek életének minden aspektusának számszerűsítését, az állomány minden egyedének puszta adathalmazként való kezelését, amely még jobban megnöveli és virtualizálja a távolságot ember és állat között. 3D fotogrammetriával létrehozott digitális tájképekkel az élőlények paraméterezett áruvá alakítása ellen küzd.

Szalai Dániel a Moholy-Nagy Művészeti Egyetemen és bécsi Angewandtén tanult fotográfiát, a Köln International School of Designon pedig integrált tervezést. BA diplomáját design- és művészetelmélet szakon szerezte. Jelenleg a Moholy-Nagy Művészeti Egyetem Doktori iskolájának hallgatója.

Fotóalapú projektjeiben az állat-ember kapcsolatát vizsgálja és reflektál társadalmi, politikai és gazdasági kérdésekre. Munkáiban gyakran használ téri, installatív megoldásokat és kever különböző médiumokat.

2018-ban elnyerte a Paris Photo Carte Blanche-díját és a Robert Capa Kortárs Fotográfiai Központ Budapest Portfolio Review-jának fődíját. A Carte Blanche Collective, a Fiatalok Fotóművészeti Stúdiója és a Fiatal Képzőművészek Stúdiója Egyesület tagja. 2018–2019-ben a PARALLEL Európai Fotográfiai Platform program résztvevője, 2019-ben a LensCulture Emerging Talent Awards nyertese, 2020-ban pedig a FUTURES platform kiválasztott alkotója.

Munkáit Európa-szerte számos egyéni és csoportos kiállításon bemutatták és gyakran publikálják hazai, illetve nemzetközi médiumok. Első, Novogen című könyve, 2021-ben jelent meg a The Eriskay Connection gondozásában.

Budapesten él és dolgozik.

DÁNIEL SZALAI

Dániel Szalai’s dramatic works examine the relationship between humans and animals. His latest series was inspired by the news that facial recognition software is now being used in animal husbandry. The extensive technological infrastructure will make it possible to quantify every aspect of a cow’s life, to treat every individual in the herd as a mere data set, further increasing and virtualizing the distance between humans and animals. He takes up the fight against the transformation of living beings into parameterized commodities with digital landscapes that employ 3D photogrammetry.

Dániel Szalai studied photography at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design and the Angewandte in Vienna, and integrated design at the Cologne International School of Design. He holds a BA in Design and Art Theory. He currently pursues his PhD at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design.

His photo-based projects explore the relationship of humans and animals, and reflect on social, political and economic issues. He often employs spatial, installation-based solutions in his works, as well as a combination of different media.

In 2018 he was awarded Paris Photo’s Carte Blanche award and the main prize of the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Centre’s Budapest Portfolio Review. He is a member of the Carte Blanche Collective, the Studio of Young Photographers and the Studio of Young Artists Association. In 2018–2019 he was a participant of the PARALLEL European Photography Platform, in 2019 he won a LensCulture Emerging Talent Award, and in 2020 he was a selected artist of the FUTURES platform.

His works have been shown at numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe, and they are frequently published in Hungarian and international media. The Eriskay Connection published his first photo book, Novogen in 2021.

He lives and works in Budapest.
